Do Orthodontists Remove Wisdom Teeth During Treatment?

17/02/2023

It’s crucial to have your teeth checked by an orthodontist to determine whether they are crowded should they appear to overlap or to be too close together. Do orthodontists remove teeth, you may be thinking?

In most cases, an orthodontist will collaborate with an oral surgeon to have any wisdom teeth removed before they cause problems. It’s advisable to let the experts handle uncomplicated tooth extractions even though all oral health professionals have the necessary skills. We wouldn’t dare enter another specialist’s area of competence, just as we wouldn’t advise you to have orthodontic treatment from any other specialists.

When identifying and treating tooth misalignments, orthodontic specialists play a unique role.

If your teeth are crowded, an orthodontist may suggest tooth removal, but only if doing so is likely to garner results that are within your best interest.

You will have time to consider any concerns you may have, and how you might want to prepare, since treatment won’t take place at the orthodontist’s office.

Why Would I Need to Remove My Wisdom Teeth?

Between the ages of 17 and 25, your third molars are likely to erupt. This shouldn’t be a problem, but your dentist or orthodontist may advise an extraction if they see in your X-rays that there isn’t enough room for the teeth to emerge normally. Generally speaking, it is best to have these teeth extracted if:

  • Your wisdom teeth are impacted. They create discomfort, support potentially fatal infections, or are unable to erupt, instead staying below the gum line.
  • Your teeth are incising incorrectly and rubbing against neighbouring teeth. You should get these extra parts taken out if there isn’t room for them.
  • Your wisdom teeth are difficult to clean since they are in a difficult-to-reach position and have cavities despite having erupted.

When you visit an orthodontist for the first time, they will evaluate the problem and go over the recommended course of action for treating the malocclusion. This may entail the extraction of one or more teeth, allowing for other teeth to erupt from the gum normally. Orthodontists may advise extraction as part of their diagnostic if the teeth are crowded, or if one or more of them are seriously misaligned.

The majority of tooth extractions are easy processes. An “elevator” is a device that a dentist or orthodontist uses to remove fully developed teeth from their sockets. The tooth will next be extracted using forceps. For more difficult issues, such as impacted wisdom teeth or teeth with gum-line breaks, perhaps a surgical extraction is required. Another professional will need to handle this, typically an oral surgeon.

Can I Remove My Wisdom Teeth While Wearing Braces?

Yes. Together with other specialists, your orthodontist will extract your third molars without delaying your orthodontic treatment. You shouldn’t worry about delaying obtaining braces until after having your wisdom teeth removed because they won’t interfere with your recovery.

When is tooth extraction required?

If your orthodontist finds that your teeth are crowded, they could suggest extraction or tooth removal. If your mouth is smaller, or if you have extra teeth, such as wisdom teeth, tooth removal may be beneficial. Before undergoing any surgeries, it’s crucial to acquire the qualified and experienced opinion of an orthodontist regarding which teeth should be extracted or whether any teeth should be extracted to achieve the greatest possible outcome for your smile in the future.

Can overcrowding be an issue?

Because they overlap, twist, or are too close together, overcrowded teeth can make it more difficult to properly clean and take care of your teeth. This can lead to issues concerning the maintenance and overall health of your teeth and gums.
When a tooth, for any reason, is unable to emerge fully through the gums, it is said to be impacted. Overcrowding may result in teeth that are overlapping or impacted, which increases the risk of cavities and gum diseases for your teeth.

Because it can influence your smile’s appearance, tooth crowding is occasionally considered a cosmetic problem. However, it can have a much wider range of effects, making it crucial to address it for your health.

Please don’t hesitate to speak with an orthodontist  to find out what your smile requires, if you have overcrowding issues, or are simply interested in the options available to enhance your smile.
