How To Get Rid Of Bad Breath

04/11/2020

Bad breath can be very embarrassing but it is actually a very common issue. A study has shown that 25% of all adults in the UK routinely experience bad breath! Luckily there are many things you can do to get rid of bad breath for good and feel confident again.

Brush Regularly
Brushing your teeth is the best way to prevent bad breath as it kills the bad bacteria causing the smell and also helps to dislodge any food debris between your teeth. Ensure you brush each corner of your mouth and use a toothpaste with a mint flavour to freshen up your breath first thing in the morning to start your day off fresh.

Brush Your Tongue
Have you noticed that your tongue isn’t nice and pink but has a yellow/white covering? Plaque, food and drink debris can attach itself to your tongue and create foul odours. When brushing your teeth, make it a routine to brush your tongue as well. It may feel strange at first if this isn’t usually part of your routine, but once you get into the habit of brushing your tongue morning and night you will notice a difference in how fresh your mouth feels and smells!

Floss Daily
Brushing your teeth is essential to better smelling breath, but flossing can reach places your toothbrush can’t. Floss dislodges awkward food particles that may get trapped in your teeth and can also fit snuggly against your gum line to reach plaque that your toothbrush can’t. Most people choose to floss before bed so they know they are going to bed with squeaky clean teeth and no nasties on their teeth that can harbour overnight.

Mouthwash
Mouthwash contains antibacterial ingredients to keep any bad bacteria in your mouth under control so you should swill with mouthwash each time you brush. When buying mouthwash, check the label to see if it contains chlorine dioxide as this ingredient will neutralise any bad odour and leave you minty fresh.

See Your Dentist
If you have tried all the above options and your bad breath persists, you should visit your dentist. Bad breath is usually nothing to be worried about but it can be a sign of diabetes or gum disease so it’s essential you get seen by a professional who can take a look and give you peace of mind or a plan going forward to improve your oral hygiene further.
