What is Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) AND AIRFLOW?

How Guided Biofilm Therapy refreshes your smile

A deep clean with Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) can restore your natural smile with teeth that look and feel good.

GBT is an advanced hygiene protocol that uses disclosing dye and Airflow® technology - a deep cleaning treatment that immediately leaves your mouth fresh and your teeth bright.

Even with daily brushing and oral care, over time teeth can become stained from tea, coffee, red wine, and tobacco as well as coloured food.

Periodic GBT appointments (including Airflow® polishing) are a great way to remove persistent stains, light tartar and plaque build-up from your teeth. GBT deep cleaning can also improve your oral hygiene and leave you with fresher breath.

What happens during GBT with Airflow® cleaning?

Experience a deep clean with Guided Biofilm Therapy

Your dentist or hygienist will make sure you are comfortable in our relaxing patient chairs. A GBT treatment includes applying a disclosing dye to highlight areas of plaque, followed by a fine jet of air, water and powder (Airflow®) that is directed towards your teeth at high pressure.

Airflow® can be safely used on implants, bridges, veneers and crowns.

The lightly abrasive action of an Airflow® cleaning treatment can remove surface staining and effectively clean the front and back surfaces as well as between teeth. You can expect immediately cleaner, lighter teeth and a brighter smile.

Does the cleaning treatment hurt?

A gentle, effective tooth cleaning experience in Kettering

Patients with sensitive teeth can sometimes experience temporary, mild discomfort. However, as GBT  is a non-contact cleaning procedure, most patients feel no more than a slight tingling sensation.

Frequently asked questions in Kettering.

How often should I have Guided Biofilm Therapy with Airflow® polishing?

We usually recommend having Guided Biofilm Therapy as part of your regular dental hygiene visits to Kettering Dental & Implant Clinic - typically every 6 months, though this may vary depending on your needs. Guided Biofilm Therapy includes Airflow® polishing as one of its key steps.

Is Guided Biofilm Therapy with Airflow® suitable for everyone?

Yes, Guided Biofilm Therapy is safe for most patients, including those with crowns, veneers, bridges, and implants. Airflow® polishing is a gentle part of the process. Your dentist here in Kettering will advise if it’s right for you.

How long does a Guided Biofilm Therapy hygiene appointment take?

Guided Biofilm Therapy appointments usually take about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on your individual oral health needs. This includes Airflow® cleaning and other steps in the Guided Biofilm Therapy protocol.

Can Guided Biofilm Therapy with Airflow® remove deep stains?

Guided Biofilm Therapy is very effective at removing surface stains caused by food, drink and smoking, thanks to Airflow® technology. For deeper discolouration, other whitening treatments might be recommended.

Will Airflow® replace my regular brushing?

No, Airflow® complements your daily oral care but doesn’t replace the need for regular brushing and flossing at home. It’s also important to visit us for regular dental check-ups, as we take a preventive approach to your dental care.
