Dental bridges at a glance

A dental bridge can be an effective and long-lasting solution when you have missing teeth. It helps restore your smile by filling the gap left behind, improving both the function and appearance of your teeth.

A conventional bridge can be used if you have natural, healthy teeth next to the space left by the missing tooth. Often crafted from porcelain, the prosthetic tooth is supported by dental crowns bonded to the adjacent teeth.

A resin-retained bridge sits over the gum and is held in place with a metal wire which is bonded to adjacent teeth. A resin-retained bridge is a less invasive treatment as it does not involve the creation of new crowns.

Every dental bridge is custom-made to match the appearance of your existing teeth, making them virtually invisible. Eating and speaking become easier and you will enjoy a full smile again.

What does the treatment for a dental bridge involve?

What to expect during your dental bridge treatment

After consultation with your dentist, if you decide a dental bridge is right for you, we will plan your treatment. A dental bridge is generally completed over at least two appointments. During your first treatment appointment for a conventional dental bridge, the teeth adjacent to the gap will need to be shaped to accept new crowns to support the bridge. Your dentist will use a local anaesthetic to minimise discomfort during this procedure.

When the supporting teeth have been prepared, we will take 3D scans of your teeth. We use specially selected dental labs that then custom make your new bridge. We match the shape and colour as closely as possible to your existing teeth for a natural look.

Considering your options

A dental bridge can be an effective and virtually invisible replacement for missing teeth if the adjacent teeth are strong and healthy. If your natural teeth have already had dental restoration treatment or you have gum or oral health issues, your dentist may consider other treatment options.

What is a dental crown?

Dental crowns at a glance

Dental crowns are used to restore and strengthen decayed or broken teeth and prevent further damage.

A crown is a custom-made replacement for the top part of a tooth that has been damaged by decay or breakage. The new crown recreates the same form and function as the original tooth making eating more comfortable, improving oral health and giving you a healthy smile. Dental crowns are fabricated from ceramic, gold or non-precious metal alloys as well as natural-colour material such as porcelain or resin. Resin or porcelain can make a crown virtually invisible for a self-confident smile.

What is the treatment for a crown?

What to expect during your dental crown treatment

The treatment for a crown generally takes two appointments to complete. To minimise discomfort, your dentist will start by numbing the area around the tooth to be treated. Decayed or damaged sections of the tooth are then removed. The remaining healthy part of the tooth is reshaped in preparation to receive the new crown.

Your dentist will then take scans of your teeth to ensure the precise fit and natural shape of the new crown. Our specialist dental lab will make your new bespoke crown in a few days. While the permanent crown is being made, a temporary crown may be fitted.

On your return visit, your dentist will make sure the new crown fits correctly on your tooth. Once the shape and appearance have been optimised, the new crown is permanently bonded onto the tooth.

How long can a crown last?

Keeping your crown looking its best

Dental crown restorations are durable treatments to repair damaged teeth, potentially lasting up to 15 years or more.

Dental technology and techniques are advancing all the time. If you have an existing crown that has come loose, or that you are unhappy with for oral health, functional or aesthetic reasons, we can help.

By replacing a loose, damaged or unsightly crown, eating comfort, oral health and the natural look of your teeth can be improved.

Frequently asked questions about dental bridges and crowns

What’s the difference between a dental crown and a bridge?

A dental crown is used to cover and protect a damaged or weakened tooth - restoring its shape, strength and appearance. A bridge, on the other hand, is used to replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring a prosthetic tooth (or teeth) to the adjacent natural teeth or dental implants. At our Kettering practice, we offer both options and will guide you towards the most suitable solution based on your oral health and goals.

How long do crowns and bridges last?

With proper care, dental crowns and bridges can last 10 to 15 years or more. Their longevity depends on factors such as your oral hygiene routine, diet and whether you grind your teeth. During your regular check-ups at our Kettering clinic, we’ll check your restorations to ensure they remain secure, functional and looking their best.

Will my crown or bridge look natural?

Absolutely. We work with trusted dental labs to create custom-made restorations that match the shape, size, and colour of your natural teeth. Whether you’re having a crown placed on a damaged tooth or a bridge to fill a gap, the end result is designed to blend seamlessly with your smile. Our patients in Kettering regularly comment on how natural their new teeth look and feel.

Is the procedure painful?

We use local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable during crown or bridge treatment. Most patients describe the procedure as painless and are surprised by how straightforward it is. If you’re feeling nervous, let us know - our experienced team in Kettering takes extra care to make every visit as relaxing as possible.

What happens if my crown or bridge becomes loose or damaged?

If your crown or bridge becomes loose, cracked or uncomfortable, we recommend seeing us as soon as possible. At our Kettering dental practice, we can assess the issue and either repair or replace your restoration to restore comfort and function. We also offer replacement options if you’re unhappy with the look or feel of an older crown or bridge.
