"Am I too old for this?" is one of the most common questions we hear from adults considering Invisalign, closely followed by parents asking whether clear aligners are suitable for their teenager. Neither question has a single, simple answer, because it depends less on age itself and more on what your teeth actually need. Here's a genuinely honest breakdown of who Invisalign suits, at what age, and why.
There's no cut off age for Invisalign. What matters far more is the health of your gums and jawbone, since teeth move through bone, and treatment works best when that foundation is in good condition. Plenty of adults in their 40s, 50s and beyond straighten their teeth successfully with aligners, often having waited years, sometimes decades, before finally deciding to do something about it.
The other genuine advantage for adults is discretion. Many people considering treatment are doing so for work reasons, and the fact that aligners are close to invisible in day to day conversation is often the deciding factor over fixed braces.
For teenagers, the treatment itself works the same way, but success depends heavily on discipline. Aligners need to be worn for around 20 to 22 hours a day to move teeth on schedule, only coming out to eat and brush, and that requires a level of consistency that varies a lot from one teenager to the next.
We're honest with parents and teenagers about this during the consultation. If a teenager is unlikely to stick to that routine, fixed ceramic or metal braces often make more practical sense, simply because they don't rely on the same day to day compliance. Our dentist has been treating orthodontic cases, including plenty of teenagers, for more than 30 years, so this assessment is based on genuine pattern recognition rather than guesswork.
For younger children whose teeth and jaws are still developing significantly, we don't currently provide clear aligner treatment. In these cases, other options such as functional appliances or fixed braces tend to be more appropriate for guiding growth and tooth position, and our team can advise on the right route for your child's specific stage of development.
At your consultation, our treatment coordinator will talk through your case, or your teenager's case, honestly. Sometimes that means Invisalign is a great fit; sometimes it means a fixed appliance would get a better result. We'd rather tell you that clearly at the start than have you invest in treatment that isn't the right one for your teeth.
Whether you're an adult who's been putting this off for years, or a parent trying to work out the right option for your teenager, book a consultation and get a straight answer about what will actually work for your teeth.
No. What matters is the health of your gums and jawbone rather than your age, and we treat adults across a wide age range successfully.
Around 20 to 22 hours a day, removing them only to eat, drink anything other than water, and brush your teeth.
Not currently. For younger children, other options such as fixed appliances tend to be more suitable, and our team can advise at a consultation.
We'll tell you honestly at your consultation and talk through alternatives, such as ceramic or metal fixed braces, which may suit your case better.
