A tooth abscess is a pocket of pus that appears on the gums which is caused by a bacterial infection. Generally, an abscess is caused by a dental cavity which has been left untreated or an oral injury.
To treat a tooth abscess, you will have to book an appointment with your dentist. They will then drain the abscess to remove the infection. Depending on how severe, your dentist may be able to perform a root canal to save your tooth, but in more severe case the tooth will be pulled.
If a tooth abscess is left untreated, it can lead to a life-threatening infection.
Causes of a Tooth Abscess
A tooth abscess is caused by bacteria infecting the dental pulp (the inner workings of a tooth that contains blood vessels, nerves and tissue). Infection occurs when bacteria enter the tooth through a cavity or crack which then spreads down to the root and causes the below symptoms.
