Why Do I Need A Crown?

What Is A Crown?

A dental crown is a cap that completely covers a tooth and acts as an artificial restoration by being fixed onto the tooth. Dental crowns protect your tooth from further damage and give it a more natural appearance.

Why Would I Need A Crown?

Crowns are needed when a tooth has been broken, decayed or damaged. A common reason for a crown is when a very large filling has weakened the tooth and it needs extra support and protection. Often fitted after a root canal, crowns allow you to eat and bite as if it were a natural tooth without fear of pain or sensitivity.

Crowns can also be used to improve the look of a tooth and make it appear more uniform with the rest of your smile. If you have discoloured fillings that are doing their job but are unsightly, crowns are often used to improve the appearance.

How Are Crowns Fitted?

If your dentist decides it is in your best interest to have a crown, the process is:

  1. An impression of the tooth that needs restoring is taken
  2. Based on the impression, a crown is made in a laboratory to fit perfectly between existing teeth
  3. The effected tooth is filed down into a small peg shape
  4. The crown is fitted

Benefits of A Crown

  • Gives added strength and protection to the tooth
  • Fits perfectly between surrounding teeth
  • Functions like a real tooth
  • Improves the appearance of your smile overall
