Do You Wear Invisalign Forever?

If you have had a particularly long treatment of Invisalign, once your treatment has finished you probably can’t wait to take off your retainer and never wear it again. Unfortunately, doing so may undo all the hard work of your treatment.

Do you wear Invisalign forever? Yes, kind of!

Immediately after your treatment, it is important to keep wearing your retainer so that your teeth don’t shift and move. These changes may not be immediately noticeable overnight, however, after a few days it can be tight and uncomfortable to put in your retainer.

During Invisalign treatment, you must wear your retainer for 20-22 hours per day so constant pressure is on your teeth, aiding them to move into the correct position. Once your treatment is over, your dentist will recommend wearing them every day.

12 months after your treatment, enough bone should have now formed around your teeth to keep them stable without the need of a retainer. However, most dentists recommend wearing your retainers 3-5 times per week to prevent any large movements.

If you stop wearing your Invisalign retainer and your teeth move to such a degree where your retainer no longer fits, you will have to start a new course of Invisalign which will be an unnecessary extra cost.
